We are only the temporary stewards of our county. We hold it in trust for our children, grandchildren and future generations.
Yorkshire – like the rest of the world faces a climate and ecological emergency. Now, more than ever it is important that we are good stewards and don’t betray the trust of those that follow us and leave them with the price to pay for our mismanagement of the county’s natural resources.
There are lots of ways that we in Yorkshire can do our bit to avoid further climate and ecological disaster, starting by setting our own ambitious regional targets.
There are lots of ways that we in Yorkshire can do our bit to avoid further climate and ecological disaster, starting by setting our own ambitious regional targets.
These targets can be reached for examples by: encouraging the use of new and existing renewable energy resources; moving towards a Bio-economy; tackling pollution; more effective spatial planning; reforestation; investing in public transport and new cycle routes and wildlife conservation.
At the same time we must redress the damage already done by prioritising flood defences.
National governments have a huge responsibility for the environment but that agenda will be delivered at local and regional level. A strong Yorkshire Parliament is best placed to enhance our quality of life by applying local understanding, ingenuity and legendary dislike for waste.
